The Role of the Media in Fighting the COVID-19 Pandemic
Background
The coronavirus is a global illness that emerged from China in December 2019, with
primary infections recorded from Wuhan in the Hubei province. Over time, it spread globally,
with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring it a pandemic in January 2020(Anwar et
al., 2020). To date, the disease has claimed over two million lives, with the number of infections
alone in the region of 111 million (Dhanashree et al., 2020). These numbers are expected to rise
due to the nature of the virus's spread, with a proper vaccine still unavailable to curb this high
rate of infections.
The virus attacks the respiratory system leading to coughs, respiratory failure, shortness
of breath, fever, headaches, and even loss of taste. In other instances, it can lead to kidney
failure. Additionally, the illness affects individuals with underlying conditions, and it also attacks
the elderly due to their diminished immune systems. With such a wide range of susceptible
individuals, concern has been growing with such increased fatality rates (Dhanashree et al.,
2020). The illness has also subjected a majority of countries to financial constraints as most of
the regulations have led to decreased economic activities as governments grapple with conditions
to control the virus's spread.
With the virus being likened to the 1918 flu, many comparisons have emerged on the
handling and control of both pandemics. However, one significant difference has been noted in
the media handling, which has led to increased discussions in the media's role in handling the
COVID-19 pandemic (Dhanashree et al., 2020). In 1918, the media was criticized heavily as it
failed to report on issues concerning the virus. In other instances, false information was provided
in the newspapers, which gave the people false hopes on recovery, leading to increased
