Cyber Crime and privacy concerns have often raised contradictory opinions from one

person to the other. A bill passed to control and mend the same has also been in the limelight with

both supporters and detractors airing their views in equal measure. In fact, one party refers to the

bill as a ‘surveillance’ bill while the other refers to it as a ‘computer security’ bill. Each party has

a right to defend their view as cybercrime and privacy issues affect people differently. However, I

believe that this bill is a ‘computer security’ bill.

Firstly, this bill is meant to protect the people from unauthorized access to their computer

systems, data alteration, data destruction or theft of intellectual property. Many a times, some of

the people engaged in these crimes get away scot-free because there are no laws guiding the

punishment for such crimes. Also, the bill sets strict rules on how such cases are to be dealt with

in case of breach.

This bill is also key in protecting national security. Often, the security department is

vulnerable to hacking, espionage, or information warfare. The bill in such a case ensures that

national security is of high priority has it allows police departments access to data so that they can

be well informed of any possible crimes against the people and themselves as well. Additionally,

the bill also protects their rights and outlines clear jurisdictions within which they act.

Into the bargain, I believe that the bill will make the American people be more responsible

for their actions. This is especially in the purview of cyberbullying. Many people have been victims

of cyberbullying and some have even ended up being depressed. Most of the victims have never

found compensation for such acts of violence towards them. This bill is therefore key to the
