Introduction
As health care leaders, we must understand the importance of data analysis. According to
Conner et al (2017), we can and should use descriptive statistics in health care to achieve higher
levels of professional development. In this industry, trends and changes can have a huge impact
on the direction of our organization. We can use both clinical data and financial data to help us
better understand where our organization stands. We can observe where we are now, where we
were, and try to predict where we will go in the future.
Our organization has been faced with a growing problem that we need to address. The
issue is Hospital Acquired Conditions. These are the conditions, or infections that a patient
acquires, while in our hospital, being treated for a separate condition. They include things like
bloodstream and urinary infections, falls, and pressure ulcers. These conditions can have a
significant impact on our organization, both financially, and clinically (Nero et al , 2012). It is
important that we understand the data surrounding HACs so that we can decrease the occurrence
of such events, in the future.
Statistical Results
Our data looks at HAC rate, nursing hours (PPD), skill mix, and average length of stay.
When looking at the correlation values of our data, we know that the closer a vlue is to 1, the
stronger the correlation. Our data shows that as nursing hours increase, the rate of hospital
acquired conditions decreases. This is shown with a correlation of -0.799. We can say that the
average length of stay has a slight correlation with HAC rate and that skill mix does not have a
strong correlation.
According to Kros et al (2016), “variance and standard deviation are used extensively in
statistical applications and are, in fact, the basis upon which much of statistics is constructed.”
