Week 3 Question Responses and Shell Command Assignment
POS420 – Introduction to UNIX
David Keathly
Question Responses (Part 1):
What is the purpose of the 'echo' command?
The echo command is used to print words to the screen. This is usually seen by the command
line:
echo THIS IS AN ECHO COMMAND MESSAGE
which would cause the statement "THIS IS AN ECHO COMMAND MESSAGE" to display on
the screen (without the quotes).

In the case statement, why are the first letters both caps and lower case?
Even though the commands and file-saving within UNIX are case-sensitive, the first letters in a
case statement are in both caps and lower case (ex. [Aa]) because it is allowing an acceptable
match to be found for the case label. For example, if the word was 'Phoenix', then the case
statement would be [Pp] to search and match both upper (Phoenix) and lower (phoenix) case
returns.
What does 'esac' mean?
ESAC is the command to end the case statement. It is actually 'CASE' written in reverse.
