Nursing Diagnosis & Infographic
The assignment pertains to the case scenario of Mrs. G., who is a forty-three years old
woman getting admission for the performance of robotic hemicolectomy due to complications of
the disease diverticulitis.
Overview of the Scenario
She had two episodes of exacerbation of the disease in the last eighteen months. She has
allergy to sulfa-group of antibiotics, and has a positive history of hypertension, peripheral
vascular disease, fatty-liver and hypersensitivity lung disease. She has a fifteen years history of
smoking which she quit one week ago. She has moderate obesity.
Mrs. G. has a confirmed diagnosis of diverticulitis. Diverticulitis, often chronic, is a
condition characterized by inflammatory changes in the pouches arising abnormally from the
large intestine. It manifests clinically as pain in the lower abdomen, often sudden in onset. Other
signs and symptoms of the disease include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea alternating with
constipation, pyrexia and bloody stools.
The pathophysiology of diverticulitis is not understood completely (Strate & Morris,
2019). However the current understanding of the pathophysiology of diverticulitis explains that
diverticulitis is a result of obstructive and traumatic insult to the diverticula leading to ischemic
changes in them, which are accompanied by infective processes, and perforation. The
pathophysiology of diverticulitis is explained by chronic inflammatory and altered-microbiome
theories. Studies have demonstrated chronic inflammatory changes like those linked to sedentary
lifestyles and obesity to be involved in the pathophysiology of diverticulitis. The altered-
microbiome theory implicates alterations in the microbial population of the gut to be responsible
