hematological neoplasms. The answers to the two case studies are as follows.

What nursing management should the nurse provide the patient?
The nursing management required for the patient John King, being diagnosed with
multiple myeloma is supportive care to the patient including bed and bowel care. This includes
providing physical and psychological support to the patient, regular position change to avert the
incidence of pressure ulcers, ensuring the patient’s nutritional needs are met, assessing the
patient’s pain and managing it, managing the patient’s fatigability, providing counselling and
health education to the patient about his condition, and ensuring the oral hygiene of the patient.
Explain the indication and action of the various medications ordered to treat the
patient’s symptoms.
The indications and actions of the various drugs prescribed to the patient include
calcitonin being indicated for the regulation of the calcium & phosphate level in the blood,
ibuprofen to act as analgesic and anti-inflammatory indicated to control pain, zoledronic acid is
indicated for and acts by lowering the calcium level of the blood, allopurinol is indicated for
correction of the gout and acts by reducing the blood uric acid level, and thalidomide is indicated
for correction of multiple myeloma.

What laboratory results would you anticipate due to her ecchymosis and petechia?

The laboratory results anticipated include having a lower red blood cell and platelet count
as a result of the acute myeloid leukemia, along with an increase in the white blood cells.
Why would it be important to inspect her gums and teeth?
It is important to inspect her teeth and gums in order to rule out bleeding which may
occur due to low platelet count.
Why is her liver enlarged?
Her liver is enlarged due to accumulation of leukemia cells in the liver.
