Capstone Change Project Outcomes
Introduction
Nurse staffing remains an imperative health policy issue in the context of health care
delivery systems and safety. Although nursing is among the fastest-growing occupation in the
US, the country continues to experience a massive shortfall of qualified nurses due to the lack of
nurse educators compared to the high turnover in the profession and increase of the aging
population (Butler et al., 2019). The paper aims to discuss potential health outcomes in the
project based on the effects of the nursing shortage in patients' care.
Readmission
The percentage of readmission to a hospital is dependent on the changes made to improve
patient flow through the system. The rate is also a measure to indicate the effectiveness of the
changes in the system. Some of the readmissions are desirable and part of the planned care, while
others are related to inadequate staffing, which contributes to premature discharge (Warchol et
al., 2019). The project outcomes align with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 and its
readmission reduction program of 2012 that intends to incentivize hospitals to implement
strategic methods that reduce unnecessary and expensive readmissions (Warchol et al., 2019).
Shortage of nurses hinders fundamental evidence-based interventions such as patient education
and care coordination that reduce readmission rates,
Mortality
The shortage of health care implies a failure to rescue, leading to an increase in the
mortality rate. Improved nurse staffing, especially in acute hospitals, lowers hospital mortality
