COLORECTAL CANCER SUPPORT ORGANIZATION 2
The website of focus is CancerCare.org. The website provides free professional support
services for people affected by colorectal cancer. It also provides useful information and
resources regarding the treatment and management of colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer (CRC)
sometimes called bowel cancer is any cancer that affects the colon or the rectum. According to
the American Cancer Society, about 1 in every 21 men and 1 in every 23 women will develop
colorectal cancer in the course of their lives in the United States. Colorectal cancer is also the
second leading cause of cancer deaths in women and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in
men in the United States (Song, 2021). Nonetheless, the advancement in screening techniques
coupled with improvements has drastically improved the management of colorectal cancer and
has reduced the rate of death associated with this condition.
From the epidemiological context, the incidences of colorectal cancer vary across the
globe due to the differences in screening and treatment modalities. Every year, about 149,500
new cases of large bowel cancer are diagnosed. Out of this number, about 104,270 cases are
colon cancer and the remaining number is rectal cancer. The Center for Disease Prevention and
Control, CDC also estimates that about 52,980 Americans die every year because of CRC. The
country accounts for about 8% of annual CRC-related deaths globally (Macrae, 2016). There are
several outcome measurement tools available for CRC patient assessment. One of such tools is
Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) that capture the self-reported quality outcome.
CancerCare.org provides several resources necessary for the management of CRC
including counseling, case management, provision of support groups, financial and co-pay
assistance, and most importantly community programs that help patients diagnosed with CRC
leave a fruitful life. The organization also provides healing hearts family bereavement camps and
workshops that help family members recover from the loss of a family member from colorectal
