Identify seven ways by which you will use your knowledge gained in mental health nursing
in clinical practice.
Practices of mental health occur within every environmental and social context; however,
since professional mental health nursing is expanded to include patient family advocacy,
improving my clinical competence, enhancing ethical and legal parameters, and interdisciplinary
collaboration(Oates, Drey, and Jones, 2017). Hence, there are several ways one can use the
knowledge acquired in mental health nursing in clinical practice. First, I will use the knowledge
when working with groups, families, individuals, and communities while assessing their mental
needs and develop a diagnosis. Secondly, the knowledge will be useful in providing counseling
for parents with mentally disabled children. Thirdly, the knowledge will also help in the
diagnosis and assessment of individuals using DSM-5 criteria.
Another application is in the planning of nursing care requirements based on evidence
practice. Also, it will help identify and develop approaches for addressing mental disorder stigma
social stigma and enhance patients' outcomes(Barker, 2017). Most mental illness requires long
term care and attention. As a nursing practitioner, I will help families and foster caregivers in
helping to deal with the condition through cognitive behavioral therapies, Psychotherapy, self-
help plans, and medications. Additionally, the knowledge will help other healthcare providers
review care plans, progress monitoring, and write patient records. Most importantly, the
knowledge acquired in this course will help develop rapport with patients with mental illnesses
and how to use mental health status assessment tools.
After taking this class, how would you advocate for a family member with Mental Illness?
what would be important for their recovery
Mental health advocacy is crucial because it increases awareness of behavioral health
concerns, influences policy-making, and eliminates stigma attached to mental illness.
