1. Describe ageism and its impact on societal views of older adult clients.
Ageism is negative or positive stereotypes, prejudice, and/or discrimination against
elderly people based on their chronological age or based on a perception of them as being
“old” or “elderly.” Due to ageism, there are negative attitudes and perceptions towards
older adults. Old age tends to be associated with frailty and disability, therefore
considering older adults to be of less value compared to younger adults (Musaiger &
D'Souza 2009).
2. Explain how ageism can influence the healthcare provisions of older adult
clients.
Misconceptions about aging and negative attitudes may lead to discriminatory behavior
towards the older adult population. This causes an effect on the quality and
responsiveness of healthcare services provided to older adults (Dionigi, 2015).
3. As a healthcare provider, how can one best assess and confront attitudes,
perceptions, behaviors, and biases toward older adults?
Ageism negatively affects the older population, and it is important to give them a sense of
hope, pride, confidence, security, and integrity (Meinre & Yeager, 2019). Educating the
older adult and developing a healthy philosophy on aging will allow them to understand
aging and allow them to become immune to the discrimination of ageism and prevent it
from affecting their health. Healthcare providers should advocate for their older adult
patients and educate others about the misconception of aging to change society's
perception and negative attitudes towards aging (Burnes et al., 2019). Aging is inevitable,
and those who discriminate against aging should be educated on the idea that they too
will age and run the risk of also being negatively impacted by ageism if changes do not
occur.
