Experiment 8 Steam Distillation
I. Introduction
[7]
The purpose of this experiment is to isolate the major constituents of three
components: clove oil, cinnamon bark, and carroway seeds using steam distillation.
Later on, they will be analyzed by IR spectroscopy where the IR spectrum for each
constituents will be studied as well on the succeeding activity. Functional groups,
water solubility, volatility, and other factors will be considered as to why steam
distillation is performed on these components. Through this laboratory experiment,
one will learn to set up an internal steam distillation apparatus, research and read
SDS documents related to the compounds worked with. The percent recovery of
clove oil based on the amount of cloves used as well with the other constituents will
be generated. Also, the basic operations upon performing steam distillation and the
theory for separation using gas chromatography will be discussed. Other topics like
how steam distillation works and how to keep the temperature below 100
o
C will be
covered in this experiment.
II. Safety
In this section, the essential information regarding the substances or mixtures
utilized in this experiment is generated from reference Material Safety Data Sheets
(see Citations). This is to ensure that proper handling in working with these
chemicals is observed.
