must be 100-125 words.
Topic 4
1. How do property, power, and prestige affect your personal social class? According
to Marx’s conflict perspective in what social class do you belong to and why?
With power, property, and prestige I always try as much as possible to remain with all these
elements. I always try to make use of the three to earn more and also to maintain a perfect social
class. According to Marx’s conflict perspective, I’m at proletariat social class. It means that I can
offer labor and be rewarded with a wage. The fact that I’m still at school explains a lot but I hope
in the future that I will be able to move to the top of the social class. Looking at the moment I
don’t have a choice but to focus on giving out labor and be rewarded with the wage.
1. From your perspective, what are the current shifts in global stratification? How
does this affect the economic and political power of the United States?
From my perspective instead of the way global stratification was organized into the rich and the
poor nowadays it is organized into first world countries and third world countries. First-world
countries are those countries that have military power and resources and they use their power to
exploit the third-world countries into submitting to their agenda. With this shift, the united state's
economic power has been strengthened across the global although there is competition from the
likes of Russia and China. On the political power, the united states remains an influential country
to the world’s politics even today. The current shift does not necessarily limit the united states
but it has given the country another edge.
1. In the current economic situation in the United States what do you project will
happen to social mobility and the American Dream?
With the current economic situation In the united states, I think social mobility will stagnant.
Most people will not change their social classes. The current economic condition only allows
these people to maintain their social class where they are currently. Chances of individuals
changing and climbing the ladder are limited. When looking at the American dream most of
those who thought that an equal society for all will be realized their dream will only remain a
dream. Chances of realization are very limited as economic hardship experienced by other races
in the united states remains to be a major hindrance. Achieving anything that will align with the
dream will become almost impossible.
1. Describe the Horatio Alger myth. Based on your own experience discuss the
strengths and weaknesses of the myth for both men and women.
Horatio Alger's myth explains that boys become rich through hard work, the portrayal of
perseverance, hope, optimism, and also luck by working with those who have already made. In
an actual sense, this is inaccurate as the myth portrays the boy’s success as accidental as the boy
becomes successful through the traditional virtues such as honesty. The strengths of this theory
to men are that it appreciates the value of hard work but its cores weakness to men is believing
