Reflect on 2 key differences between the UK and US Health systems
The US healthcare system was ranked last when compared to 10 industrialized nations in
a study done in 2014 whereas the UK system clinched position one compared to 10 developed
nations in a study done in the same year. Secondly, the US long-term care system receives funding
from income taxes, Medicare premiums, and payroll taxes (Chris, 2016). In contrast, the UK long-
term care system acquires funding from local and central taxation and user charges. Advanced
practice nurses collaborate with physicians in one or more health practices that enhance patient
safety and facilitate a healthy and desirable outcome. Nurses form the primary advocates of
patients by creating a link between them and the facility’s healthcare system (Abbasinia et al.,
2020).
What are key opportunities related to advocacy and politics interventions that can
be done by advanced practice nurses to improve our current health system?
A continued communication link between the nurse and a patient enhances respect and
trust between the two, thus representing them in advocacy protecting patient’s interests, making
relevant decisions about their welfare, and defending their rights. Further, nurses focus on
coordinating care and managing patients’ caseloads as they flow in the facility. They also help
patients blend with other hospital settings and at their homes for further recovery. They deliver
individualized kind of patient care where they refer to patients with specific names relating to their
rooms, enhancing the connection between the two in the road towards recovery. Additionally, they
can also advance their education to catch up with the latest research and apply evidence-based
practices. Nurses also empower patients towards self-care by motivating them, planning for their
care, and showing them compassion to ensure patients retain their dignity and independence.
