Approaching Educational Shortcomings
Brief Summary
Collectively, the articles share highly informative perceptivities concerning the past
and present education conditions in particular areas of the United States. While the country is
globally perceived to be a first-world economy, the articles present a contrary approach and
share insights into most learners' real challenges. In essence, the study by John (314) reveals
the shortcomings experienced by Latino and black students, certainly evolving around
academic, "social, psychological," and cultural domains. Traditionally, Latino and black
learners face numerous challenges associated with beliefs that significantly affect their
overall academic success. Besides other renowned concerns such as social and economic
issues, there is adequate evidence in the articles attesting that race, ethnicity, identity, and
culture significantly influence academic achievement by impacting the students' wellness
(John 312 - 334). Collectively, renowned social aspects present numerous complexities that
negatively impact and continuously delude equality among American learners.
The article by Gilberto et al. embraces a personalized model that reveals numerous
personal experiences and educational challenges (662). This particular article also focuses on
the need to consider interpersonal relationships among the youth and their respective effect
on educational achievements. The report presents a study on a student who shares how
opportunities pass by that would instead encourage robust interpersonal relationships in
school, thus affecting academic "success" (Gilberto et al.). In brief, through an article,

Gilberto et al. attest to the positive impact of interpersonal relationships towards developing
mutual respect between learners and teachers and valuing the differences attached to ethnicity
and race (671). In contrast, Gilberto et al. acknowledge that most opportunities do not
inevitably present themselves because learners have to be in school, but because other aspects
such as "financial abilities" and family setups also play a part (669). Teachers, school
administrators, and staff are portrayed as "not interested" in the learners' financial strengths
but are singularly committed to respecting school administrative traditions and structures
(Elizabeth and Elizabeth).
Areas of Agreement
The insights presented in the articles are evidently informative and worth considering
if the country needs to rechannel its targets towards achieving educational goals. The reports
provide referential conclusions on the actual education status and shortcomings facing
disadvantaged students. However, the two unchallengeable opinions that this reflective
journal agrees with are: race, ethnicity, culture, and identity significantly affect academic
success, and learners' interpersonal skills and relationships significantly contribute to
individual academic success (Margaret). Embedded ethnic and racial disparities influence
unequal educational opportunities among subject students. Also, there is agreement that
systematic stereotypes, practices, and policies inertly function against disadvantaged students
and learners of color and minority groups by dimming their academic success opportunities.
Long-term educational impacts include self-worth and self-identity, specifically at the college
level (Elizabeth and Elizabeth). Education also impacts how one considers themselves on
issues associated with social classes. For example, after attaining a college degree, society is
likely to consider one as different from those with lowers academic achievements. Non-
conformity between students and teachers, particularly in racially diverse compositions, may
