CORRUPTION WITHIN COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS 2
Corruption Within Community Corrections
The scenario where Daniels decides to bribe the community corrections counsellor and
not attend the rest of the diversionary meetings for ninety days presents ethical issues that affect
people in different ways. A fundamental ethical system that applies to the situation comes from
normative ethical theories. Normative theories in ethics not only tell people what they ought to
do but why they do things that in certain instances, appear counterintuitive to what they think an
ethical decision should be. For instance, in this case, the community corrections counsellor, Mike
Ponzi knows that he should not take a bribe in carrying out his duties and responsibilities.
Daniels also knows that offering the counsellor the air tickets amounts to bribery. The
implication is that both parties know that they are not supposed to do what they are doing
because it is illegal and against the law. They ought to follow all the provisions of the diversion
contract. However, Daniels’s ego tells him that he cannot go for all the meetings, yet he has the
power to buy his freedom and not attend the sessions. On his part, the counsellor posits that
taking the air tickets will not hurt any person and thus proceeds to take them from Daniels.
One normative ethical theory that arises in this scenario is ethical egoism which implores
on individuals to always pursue self-interest at the expense of anyone or anything. In this sense,
ethical egoism advances that no one should promote the interests of another person (Westcott,
2019). Proponents of ethical egoism like Adam Smith posit that when each individual pursues
their self-interest, they are in a position to promote the overall good. Pursuing self-insatiable
desires unintentionally may benefit society since individuals are the best judges of their self-
interest (Del Carmen et al., 1985). In other words, individuals are motivated to work extra hard
to attain their self-benefits and interests as opposed to attaining any other goals.
