Berlin Wall Creation
1. Reasons for Berlin Wall’s creation
The Berlin wall began as a barbed-wire fence dividing a city between Berlin. Western
Berlin started becoming risky for East Germany citizens (GDR) due to its socialist ideas
(Turner, 1998). Further, the introduction of rearmament through the creation of a nuclear
weapon by Berlin resulted in tension in 1959. The Soviet leaders wanted to end the free
movement and access between the West and East Berlin, and therefore threatening
socialism. Khrushchev proposed the creation of a city of a free city of Berlin with its
police and foreign symbol which would only be possible through the creation of force in
Western Berlin. The west rejected the proposals and offered German leaders a peace
treaty instead that ended up threatening its leaders (Turner, 1998). That triggered the
conflict between Western Berlin in the Soviet Union since the west citizens began
frightening to retain freedom in the city. Even though negotiation efforts began, they
resulted in no agreement. On the eve of the Paris peace meeting, the Soviet Union shot
the US plane as it flew over the soviet air space. The concern by the eastern leaders was
the number of young energetic people moving from the east to west that people feared
could lead to deflation of its economy. Khrushchev met with Kennedy in a peace
meeting in Vienna in 1961 but failed to agree. The leaders in the East, due to worry of the
declining population and economy, pushed for the crossing of the border that Khrushchev
agreed to. Finally, the troops in the East built a barbed-wire barrier through the center in
Berlin, splitting families and the two sides.
