HSCO511 Wk 4 DQ: Group leadership and performance
The reading and the film focused on leading a group session. In between the readings, I
was able to analyze different skills described and demonstrated by Jacobs et al. and Corey et al.
and their benefits in leading a growth group. One skill I would consider the easiest for me is to
develop a safe environment that allows for freedom of expression during the counseling session.
This skill includes encouraging and supporting members to deal with personal situations such as
anxiety and depression. Group cohesiveness is a critical factor when leading a growth group.
There must be intense trust between the leader and the growth group members. As a counselor, I
must possess sufficient skill to uplift someone when low. Every professional job I engage in
includes supporting and encouraging the members of the group. The body of Christ is a nominal
symbol of the concept of unity (Ephesians 4:16 KJV). The body of Christ is built in love; all
people are joined and held together by this symbol of love. On top of building trust and unity,
supporting and encouraging members creates an environment of respect and confidence between
the counselor and the client. Corey et al., (2014) introduction build trust and unity by
empowering the group members. The author used the repeat round member strategy where
members named the prior speaker and share something about themselves. This helped group
members know much about one another and get a chance to express their hopes, expectations,
and fears. Promoting unity and trust must involve self-awareness (Jacob et al., 2015). The leader
must enhance the clarity of questions being asked by removing all hindrances to the process. The
leader must be specific to intentionally focus on the fears the members bring in the group by
employing techniques such as thinking about what the speaker said, constantly using the
repetitive cycle of listening, responding, supporting, and asking for clarification. Positively,
