Discussion 5A: Contradictory messages?
1) According to the authors, what message/s (e.g. "might is right", "sexism is natural" etc)
are embedded in children's film, toys, textbooks or literature?
Children’s film, toys, textbooks or literature impede messages that greatly influence
children. Sexism is natural in children literature. Toy and adverts with images of male or female
are normal. Christensens (177) in the middle of reading a short essay by Hasina Deary, students
observe that in almost all cartoons, the female character needs rescuing by the male character.
Gordon also observed sexist toys coinciding with the traditional gender roles. Kitchen tore
products had pictures of white girls and science products had pictures of white boys.
Modernization is real. Children development today is greatly influenced by western concepts
such as toys but people realize it when aroused to. Christensens writing described it as children
receiving ‘secret education.’ All through the text, she explains how she started “…unlearning the
myths unit…” her students reacted negatively saying they were not brainwashed and did not
receive any secret education and that media had not influenced them. However, in her
observation, children were following most recent fashion trends. Lastly, children literature also

say that stereotypes are hidden everywhere. American structural racism is deeply rooted in the
nation’s mainstream culture and perennial lifestyles. Stereotypes have moved along historical
lines of social class. One child noted, ‘’you wear jordache and pumas’’ is you are poor’
(Gordon 221). Social status is used create identity. Often, despite the sexist choices where girls
go for dolls while boy’s trucks, only white children interact with these objects. Christensens
(176) made this observation as children displayed the same old stereotypes while asked to look at
the cartoons and movies beyond requirements.
2) Why does this matter to you? (What connections do you make from these readings - to
your life, as an educator or student?)
As an educator, the future of the kids is very important. This matters to me because
Christensens and Gordon highlight the need and the importance of looking at what we are
teaching kids. New materials such as the latest technology are crucial assets in teaching, but
educators need to alter them accordingly. For instance, if the shelf contains books of only white
children with their moms and dads, we need to add diversity to the classroom. Flashcards used to
teach the English language to ESL children may contain only images of white children and many
other gender stereotypes. Since stereotypes are hidden everywhere in American kid literature,
educators need to alter them. For me, it was interesting to know that the social culture industry
still depicts the dominance of one sex, one gender, and one race over a weaker counterpart. This
was important to strategize on how to critique world media around them. We can use different
generations of cartoons, have children critique videos of their choices, create report cards for a
variety of programs, suggest plausible changes, write for potential readers, and ask questions.
Overall, the objective is to learn how to critique these media messages rather than absorb them in
my life as an educator.
