RESEARCHING EDUCATION BEYOND THE SCHOOL WALLS 2
INTRODUCTION
"It takes a village to raise a child." This is a popular African proverb advocating for the
necessity of societal involvement in child-rearing. Care for children extends beyond classroom
walls and immediate family as the community impacts greatly on child growth and development.
Nowadays, children in their school days are transformed by an unprecedented convergence of
matured screen technology and sophisticated unfettered commercialism. From morning to night,
children's heads are bombarded with messages designed to sell something and not to better their
lives for better growth and development. Educators have to look beyond the classroom and
consider the key influencers of child values beyond family, peer groups, or deep into the
neighborhoods. The influence of the commercial world can be termed great. There is mouthing
evidence that the convergence of technology, backward steps in corporate regulation, and in this
era of 'busy and careless adults', the effect is harmful to children. Commercialization is a
grounding factor of public health and many social problems such as childhood obesity, youth
violence, sexualization, underage drinking, tobacco use, discontent about body image and
foundation of learning to make meaning in life. There is also evidence of low self-esteem and
depression due to the acquisition of materialistic values among children. Let us discuss how
educators can make use of these two resources when rethinking education beyond the classroom.
One is the Want to know more about how commercialism and advertising infiltrate childhood?
