WORK-RELATED REFLECTIONS

1. Introduction

During the internship period, I was assigned as an editorial writer at Vietnam News – a Vietnamese

national newspapers company that publishes daily articles in English. The main objective of

Vietnam News is to give Vietnamese readers thorough insights into the country’s integration and

globalization processes into the broader global economy, coupled with detailed reporting on

relevant ongoing topics, through the best use of English language journalism (Vietnam News,

2019). The objective of my unit, which is the Editorial Department, is to write and edit news article

in a complete, succinct and transparent way (Karthik, 2019), with errorless English journalism

writing style. Through the internship period, I aim to achieve three Program Learning Outcomes

(PLOs), which include improvements in: resilience, conflict resolution and teamwork in the

workplace.

As such, this paper aims to perform a self-reflection of my internship, including the task that I have

encountered, the learning that I have acquired throughout the period, and how I have met the PLOs

that I set before the start of the period. After that, concluding remarks about my changes in

objectives, as well as what I have learned about setting them will be given out at the end of the

paper.

2. Self-reflection

In order to effectively perform the self-reflections process, the STARLP model will be applied

throughout the evaluation (University of Canberra, 2019). The model consists of five components,

which include: Situation, Task, Action, Result and Learning.

Right during my first week of internship, I had been assigned with an extremely difficult task that

I had not been given any instructions beforehand, which was to write a full article for the Editorial

Board to review and publish. After having received the task, I had to spend several hours asking

for advices from senior writers in the department; fortunately, two of my colleagues were very

enthusiastic in giving me valuable guidance throughout the whole process. As a result, I was able

to finish the article in less than one day; the quality of which was commented by my colleagues to

be “very high for a first-time editorial intern”. As such, it can be seen that the situation had assisted

me in fully achieving one of my PLOs, which is to get to understand how teamwork is executed in

the workplace.

The task had also helped me to achieve another PLO of mine, which is resilience in the workplace.

After having finished the article, I submitted it to the Editorial Board and receive a relatively large

number of feedbacks, one of which was very serious, which was my lack of skills in writing

English in journalism. Knowing that this is one of my biggest weakness, I performed a detailed

research on how to best tailor my English journalism writing skills, then made some corrections

to my article and resubmitted it on the next day. To my surprise, the writing had been officially

approved, processed and printed by the Editorial Board without a second revision, which implied

that my journalism writing skills had met the quality standards of a newspaper company.

Therefore, the experience has improved my resilience in the workplace, as now I have understood

that it is crucial to accept feedbacks from others and to use them as starting points to further

improve myself in future careers.

However, I was not able to meet my final PLO set at the beginning of the internship, which is

learning more about conflict resolution in the workplace; the main reason is that there were not

any conflicts occurred during my internship period that I get to observe and taken part in.

3. Conclusion

To sum up, through my internship at Vietnam News, I have been able to achieve two out of three

PLOs that I have set before the start of the period, which are improved knowledge regarding

teamwork and resilience in the workplace. In particular, in order to be able to finish the difficult

task that I was given with flying colors, I had to ask for assistance from my coworkers and

collaborate with them throughout the whole process. In addition, I have also absorbed many crucial

feedbacks from seniors in order to improve my skills and eliminate all weaknesses in the future.

However, I did not get the chance to improve conflict resolution in the workplace; as such, if I

were to do the internship over again, I would change this PLO to be ‘improving workplace

communication’, which is another one of my weaknesses that I have discovered through this

internship. Therefore, I have learned that it is important to set objectives that are aligned with one’s
