Implications for the transport sector:
Based on the predicted patterns of tourism demand ten years from now, it can be indicated that
there are two key areas that the transportation sector must improve and develop in order to
effectively serve and even grow such demand in the long run, which include: capacity and quality
of transportation facility, both of which have been proven to directly affect the efficiency of
tourism operations (Truong, 2019).
Firstly, to be able to satisfy a larger amount of tourist demand entering the nation, it is undeniable
that certain types of transportation facilities need to be upgraded and developed in order to provide
stronger capacity for tourist destination over time. In particular, as it has been reported by Nguyen
(2019) that: Vietnam’s low-capacity road infrastructure has been one of the key causes that lead
to the degradation of local tourism, it can be stated that roads and highways within tourism areas
would need to be upgraded in terms of both size and quality, so that the flow of tourist demands
would not get disrupted. There are a number of locations across the country that would need urgent
improvements. For instance, roads connecting Da Nang City and Hoi An, have been frequently
reported to get easily flooded during rainy seasons; coupled with the road’s low construction
quality, it can be implied that this poses high safety risks for tourists traveling between the two
areas. The same issue could also be said for the roads connecting Hanoi and nearby tourist
destinations such as Ba Be Lake or Ha Giang province: they could only fit two cars at the same
time, implying that the infrastructure of the location would not be able to take up massive
expansion in tourist demands ten years from now (Truong, 2019).
Besides roads, airway is another type of transportation that needs to be upgraded across the nation
in order to better serve such a huge demand growth in terms of tourism in the next the years.
Essentially, the paper formulated by Truong (2019) has extracted that: airports in almost all of
Vietnam’s famous tourism destinations, such as: Da Nang, Nha Trang and Tan Son Nhat, have
been extremely overloaded, even after the recent capacity upgrades. The current small capacity of
airways across the nation has been one of the main causes in the existence of minor delays before
boarding of all airlines, thus negatively influencing tourist satisfaction and retention over the past
decades. According to Dinu (2018), adequate airways capacity is critical for the tourism industry
of all nations around the globe to achieve sustainable development and growth in the distant future,
due to the fact that cross-border travel demands have been gathering rapid increases in recent years

among young generations. As such, capacity upgrades will need to be done for both airports as
well as airplanes across the nation, so that the stated massive jumps in tourist demands could be
effectively absorbed and served by Vietnamese tourism leaders in the long run.
Last but not least, transportation facility quality is another area that needs to be improved by the
Vietnamese government in order to not only serve more tourists but also encourage such tourists
to conduct further revisits and purchasing decisions for tourist destination activities over time.
Particularly, transportation facility quality has been criticized by Nguyen and Dapice (2009) to be
an extremely weak element that has directly hindered foreign travelers’ intentions to visit or
conduct tourism activities within the nation, as the huge quality gap between foreign transportation
facilities and those of domestic ones have heavily degraded the nation’s tourism image over the
years. Poor transportation facility quality within the country has been reported to include: outdated
airport technology and infrastructure, old and possibly unsafe transportation means, and lack of
accessibility for foreigners due to language barriers and ambiguous pricing policies and surcharges
over time, which are usually found across major destinations such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
As a result, it is recommended that improvements to transportation facility quality are urgently
conducted for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, so that travelers could be more inclined to purchase
and repurchase consistent tourism experiences across the destinations throughout the next decade.
