Over the decades, Vietnam has been well-known for its unique cultural element of Street
Vending; in fact, throughout my years of travelling, I have not found any countries across Asia
that possess a remotely similar element to that of Vietnamese culture. In particular, there are
three types of street vendors in the country, which are: travelling vendors, sitting vendors and
vendors that sell in front of their own houses. Vietnamese street vendors can sell a wide range
of commodities, ranging from vegetables and fruits to street foods and signature cuisines of
Vietnam, such as pho, banh mi and hu tieu.
As a proud Vietnamese who is extremely passionate in photography, I love to carry around
Pumpkin, which is the nickname of my camera, to capture different moments of these street
vendors currently working under the extreme weather condition of Vietnam over time; some of
which were also taken during the lockdown of COVID-19 that was executed across the nation
during the past month.
Inspired by their beauty of working. I want to choose Street Vending as a project to working on.
In this project I will divide in two 2 types:
Firstly, I capture their moments from behind their back. It was very difficult from the first few
times because they don’t want to be being shoot. For some pictures, I have shoot without them
knowing, but sometimes they turned back and asked me “Why do you take photo for?” I was
confused for 5secs and tried to explain that I feel very inspired by their beauty of work and the
products they are selling very good. I was concocting but yes, It worked! They let me shoot as
much as I want and smile through my camera. I focus on their products and the vehicles they
are using to work. Because of the special requires “their back and product must be in frame” I
was taking their photos while ridding my bike at the same time. For God’s sake, I was risky my
life.
Secondly, I was born and raised in An Giang province where we have 4 types of group ethnics:
Khmers (Old Cambodian), Vietnamese-Chinese (Chinese root), Cham (Muslim), Kinh
(Vietnamese root). Inspired by the diversity culture and architect, I decided to combine street
vendors with these picturesque views. This project has a lot of challenges for me, I was riding
my bike around the street and find the great background such as Khmer Temple, Mosque,
Pagoda, Paddy Field, Mountain, Palm trees. However, there were never worked as what I
thought. I saw a very nice temple with clear background behind, no wires, no messy stuffs. I
waited the street vending pass by. My camera was excitingly ready, and I waited there 1hour+
but no street vendors went through, or else they rode so fast in their bike. How frustrated I
was! Furthermore, the weather never please human expectation. During the time I make my
projects, it was scorching outside. I was well prepared for myself with sunblock cloth
everything. After that, it just somehow a heavy rain came. For God’s sake! I was running back
home wet as cat and dog. For some pictures in this project, the thing I don’t like the most are
wires! It very annoyed and damn my frames and I skipped so many great landscapes because
the annoying wires were there. For instance, I do think that these wires are annoying, but it
could be something special because there are only things we can see in Vietnam! Hence, I had
ignored them and try to focus on the objective and the background behind. During this time,
it’s a blossom season. There are so many flowers are blooming on the street, so that I decided
