Executive Summary
Nowadays, as environmental issues are getting more attention from the public, managers and
decisionmakers have started to realize the growing needs as well as benefits that social
responsibility activities could provide for their firms in the long run. As the wicked issue of e-waste
in Australia is developing more complicatedly, a deep look on the environmental problem as well
as its impacts on the ecosystem and humans is provided. The result has shown that e-waste can
cause heavy damages to water, air and humans’ cellular function, which must not be taken lightly.
As such, the Australian government has issued a number of regulations and performed various
courses of actions in order to minimize its negative impacts, including the education and
information dissemination to encourage e-waste reuse, guidance for firms to seek recycling
locations, and penalties for firms that dispose e-waste irresponsibly. However, through the triple
bottom line framework analysis of Australia’s current state of e-waste control, it can be seen that
the country’s government interventions have not been very effective, as the recycling
infrastructures have been weak, causing e-wastes to not be completely handled, and that domestic
firms have not been very serious in the prioritization of social responsibility over profits. As such,
it is recommended that Australia adopts more advanced recycling technologies, provides more
incentives to encourage the reuse, recycling as well as the usage of recycled products, and
performs continuous education to households and firms in order to lower the amount of e-wastes
as well as steer the nation toward sustainability and nature perseverance for future generations.
