I. Introduction
It has been reported in a past research that a complex, multi-layered organization cannot be
managed and monitored by only one or even a small group of people, but require a thoroughly
implemented systems of leadership at multiple layers (Balogun and Johnson, 2004). This is when
middle managers come in and do their jobs; however, there are certain sets of skills that middle
managers need to acquire in order to perform their tasks effectively. This essay aims to provide an
in-depth analysis on the range of skills that middle managers need to possess in order to achieve
good results and succeed in solving complex organizational situations. The first part of the essay
is an overview on complex issues and obstacles that enterprises may face in their operations, and
the second part is a detailed analysis on the range of skills and competencies that middle managers
need to acquire in order to be able to push organizations through obstacles.
II. Detailed Analysis
II.1. Complex Situations and Obstacles in Enterprises: An Overview
According to Sousa-Poza and Kovacic (2008), it is critical for managers to deeply understand the
nature of a complex situation, since it can have a direct impact on the organization’s effectiveness
and ability to react to it. In addition, many issues appeared during the process of applying the
solutions are from decision makers’ lack of knowledge about the core elements of the situation
itself (Sousa-Poza & Kovacic, 2008). Without the tools and skills to identify this matter, it is not
possible for managers to come up with the final solutions, because the most essential piece of
information is just not there (Sousa-Poza & Kovacic, 2008). As a result, the incompleteness of
knowledge will undoubtedly lead to high levels of emergence, non-ergodicity, uncertainty,
irreconcilable perspectives, and lack of predictability of future outcomes. (Sousa-Poza &
Kovacic, 2008)
Complex situations in organization can come in various forms and types. A research by Leebov
and Scott (1990) has outlined the most frequent issues and challenges that most managers face
nowadays, which includes the increasing demand on the customers’ side, competition getting more
and more intense, the shift in values of workers, the change in reimbursement rules that influence
the decision-making process, sudden modifications to job specifications, a shuffle of the
