Abnormal Behaviors in Children
Contributing factors to abnormal behaviors in children
Children show a range of abnormal behaviors. From the genetic and biological
perspective, abnormalities in children are associated with mental disorders stem from factors
such as brain defects, biochemical imbalances, and genetic predispositions. In fact, the evidence
of biochemical imbalances and brain defects as causes of abnormal behaviors in children is
correlational. This means that although people know that such biological problems tend to occur
among children with abnormal behaviors, they do not know whether they are the real causes of
the disorder. Brain is a malleable organ thus, the behavior and experiences can influence a
child’s brain functioning. This suggests that the relationship between abnormal behavior and
biology is reciprocal. Genetic perspective argues that children can inherit abnormal behaviors
from their parents. Certainly, studies offer valuable evidence for the familial transmission of
various mental disorders such as abnormalities in children.
Sexual or physical abuse can contribute to abnormal behaviors in children, when children

will often shy away from touch. A child who has been sexually abused will show anxiety, self-
consciousness and develop inappropriate sexual behaviors.
