INTRODUCTION
The Byzantine Empire was the longest empire to have lived on the continent. It is believed that
the Byzantines got their name from the city of Byzantium or Constantinople, which today is
called Istanbul. In the East, Byzantium hat come to rest upon a base which was greatly
shrunken, but which was firm and had been strengthened by internal reorganization’
(Ostrogorsky 1959). This shows that the Byzantines were the eastern people who occupied the
Roman empire, speaking Greek instead of Latin but they never referred to themselves as
Byzantines but rather considered themselves Romans. The Roman Empire covered Western
and Central Europe, as well as Eastern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Egypt. In
AD 476, the Roman empire disappeared which led to the entry of its Western half to what is
considered as the “dark ages.” On the other hand, the Emperor on the Eastern half capital which
was better known as Byzantium/Constantinople continued ruling until AD 1453 when
Constantinople was captured, and the Eastern Roman empire infringed upon.
THE RISE OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE
The Byzantine empire was undeniably the wealthiest and most sophisticated empire in Rome
because they were the sole guardians of Ancient classical civilization. Talking about the rise
of the Byzantine empire, it is unavoidable to mention the fact that it was Constantine, the first
Christian emperor who moved the capital of the Roman Empire to a new city named
Constantinople. Constantinople remained the site of long-lasting emperors in the empire. What
gave the Byzantine empire an added advantage over its neighbouring empires was its
relationship with the Roman empire. The empire was filled with a lot of amazing things that
made visitors marvelled at the sight of the empire. Things like golden lion status, roaring, and
golden birds made the whole empire dazzling. In essence, the Byzantine empire rested on the
loyal of ancient Rome and had wonderful artists and architects who created and constructed
numerous churches. One of the remarkable churches was Hagia Sophia which was understood
to be hanging on a chain from heaven. Lastly, Leo the Mathematician also contributed greatly
