Analysis of ‘The Pathway from Slavery to freedom” by Frederick Douglass
Born into slavery to a single mother, Douglass realizes that the only way out of slavery is
through arming himself with education. This happens when a slave master reprimands his wife
for teaching the slave boy while stating that an educated slave cannot be handled. Douglass’
journey is not an easy one because the white slave masters, in order to keep the black slaves
ignorant, do everything to discourage him and the other slaves. Education is the path to freedom
and the only way for the slaves can liberate themselves from the power of their white masters.
Douglass’ teachers, his subversion of their powers and methods he used to acquire
education
His first teacher was Mrs. Auld who offered to teach the little slave boy the basics in
education such as the ABCs and other simple factors. At first, the boy thought this a simple act
of kindness but later comes to appreciate it and becomes determined to learn more. Because Mrs.
Auld cannot teach him anymore, he befriends the younger white boys in the area. The white
children go to school where they learn different concepts; Douglass realized that they are his
only way of getting the education he craved. In the narration, Douglass says he had to befriend
many of the little white boys that he met in the streets to accomplish this goal.
With Mrs. Auld Douglass was the obedient little slave child and since he was so young,
the woman saw no harm in teaching him. He also made friends with the white children away
from his master’s farm. He knew Mr. Auld did not like him getting any information so he kept it
