Consequences of the Excess Use of Technology
Introduction
The world is in a technology era where many people now rely on their devices to
entertain, inform, and connect. It is not uncommon for people to be glued to their phones or
laptops for hours on end. The problem with this is that it can cause an addiction to technology. If
people are not mindful of how much time they spend on their devices, it can lead to physical
health problems like sleep deprivation and nutritional deficiencies. This may cause people to
neglect their social lives, which could lead to isolation, loneliness, and feelings of depression.
According to a study by the American Psychiatric Association in 2008, excessive internet use
can cause anxiety disorders and depression and has been known to result in addiction. Therefore,
despite their benefits, excessive use of technology can influence society negatively.

Mahapatra, Sabita. "Smartphone addiction and associated consequences: Role of loneliness and
self-regulation." Behaviour & Information Technology, Volume 38, 2019 - Issue 8
(2019): pp. 833-844. https://doi.org/10.1080/0144929X.2018.1560499.
This article is a thirteen-page journal containing information on the consequences of
addiction to smartphones. It also looks at the role of loneliness in this addiction (Mahapatra 833-
844). The article was published in July 2019 in the Behavioral and Brain Sciences journal. The
article is a research paper. The article discusses how loneliness and self-regulation are associated
with smartphone addiction. Mahapatra, Sabita (2019) discusses the results of a study on the
correlation between smartphone addiction and loneliness. The researcher hypothesizes that
lonely people have a higher chance of suffering from smartphone addiction due to their lack of
social interaction and feelings of isolation (Mahapatra 833-844). The researcher also
hypothesized that people would be less likely to engage in smartphone addiction if they had a
good sense of self-regulation. The intended audiences are the youth and lonely people who are
addicted to social media usage. The results suggest that loneliness predicts smartphone addiction
and that helping people with loneliness may help curb their addiction. This article is credible and
shows the impacts of the overuse of technology (Mahapatra 833-844). Although only one
researcher wrote it, it is peer reviewed and provides adequate information about the subject. The
article is good for my research because it examines the consequences of using technology
excessively. Additionally, it included a good introduction and background information on the
topic. It also had a reasonable conclusion that summarized the research.

This article is a thirty-two-page journal on how excessive technology usage, especially on
social networking sites, leads to poor academic performance. The authors' intended audience for
this article is academics in the field of psychology (Cao et al. 163-174). In this article, the
authors explored the association between excessive mobile social media use and poor academic
performance (Cao et al. 163-174). The article begins with a question asking if social media
distracts academic performance (Cao et al. 163-174). The first paragraph describes the study's
results to answer this question; This study found a relationship between having lower grades and
using social networks excessively. There is a linear relationship between the two factors. The
article also explains that students who perform poorly in academics have a higher chance to be
negatively affected by social media use. The article is credible because it analyses how excessive
use of mobile social networking sites negatively impacts one's academic performance. The data
was collected from 2,256 university students from Hong Kong (Cao et al. 163-174). The article
cited seven different sources and referenced eight different studies to support their argument
(Cao et al. 163-174). It is suitable for my research topic because it discusses the impacts of
excessive use of social media sites on academic performance. This, in turn, relates to my
research which is based on the effects of using technology excessively. Therefore, this study is
crucial for understanding the use of technology.
Cao, Xiongfei, and Lingling Yu. "Exploring the influence of excessive social media use at work:
A three-dimension usage perspective." International Journal of Information Management,
Volume 46, June (2019): pp. 83-92. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijinfomgt.2018.11.019.
This journal is a ten-page article that explains the impacts of using too much social media
in different workplaces (Cao and Yu 83-92). The authors share their findings from a survey that
studied the effect of social media usage on work performance; They provide three different
perspectives on social media use (Cao and Yu 83-92). The authors have various points of view.
The first perspective is that people feel a sense of accomplishment when they feel in control of
their social media usage (Cao and Yu 83-92). The second perspective is that overuse of social
media can lead to decreased work performance. The third perspective is that excessive social
media use can lead to reduced work performance due to time spent on social media. Their points
of view are based on facts and are therefore not biased (Cao and Yu 83-92). The article is written
for individuals experiencing high social media use at work, their supervisors, and individuals
responsible for creating policies and other workplace initiatives. The article is a good resource
for understanding and observing the impact of social media on the workplace. It is credible
because it discusses and analyzes how someone may use social media at work (Cao and Yu 83-
92). The article also provides empirical evidence of how social media use can negatively affect
job performance (Cao and Yu 83-92). It is suitable for my research because it focuses on how
social media has affected the workplace and how this affects productivity. Moreover, it is
suitable for my research because it looked at the impact of excessive social media at work and
how it can be detrimental to employees. I thought this article was relevant because I am a
researcher considering social media's impacts. Therefore, it helps my research.

cognition, and wellbeing." OECD Education Working Papers No 195, 04 Feb (2019). Pp
1-45. https://doi.org/10.1787/8296464e-en.
This article focuses on the consequences that using technology has on children. The
article reviews a number of different studies that conclude an increased use of technology has
