Cultural Effects of Mass Media Messages on Society
The media contributes to a significant influence in the society. Since the advent of
technology, people have shifted to contemporary media, and no longer spends more time in
traditional media such as watching TVs or reading a newspaper. Using their Smartphone, they
can consume information from virtually all parts of the world. Unfortunately, there is no limit to
the information people may access, even though some content is meant for the adults only.
Consequently, minors have been accessing adult content, amounting to unethical behavior that
gradually develops in the society. Hence, this shift has brought significant effects, both positive
and negative in society. Undoubtedly, a change of behavior is imminent in the less developed
societies, because of mass media message influence. The goal of this paper is to discuss the

cultural effects of mass media messages on society. Overall, the distribution of mass media
messages from the dominant to less dominant culture, facilitated by technology, is the leading
cause of cultural imperialism.
Mass media message do affect society through helping the people consume extraneous
information in the society. According to the culturalists theory, people tend to interact with the
media as a way of establishing their meaning from the message and pictures they get out of it
(Penney, 2014). Therefore, the audience plays an active part in consuming message and
information. This approach establishes that there is an active interaction of the society with
media message. Rationally, when the media present powerful messages, from the, developed
cultures, it is likely that individual from the less dominant culture will actively get involved with
such information. This marks the beginning of a change in focus and thinking on the indigenous
culture. Surprisingly, most societies around the world tend to warmly receive the U.S culture, in
anticipation that they would be developed and civilized as the U.S people.
Also, expert upholds the hypodermic syringe Model in connection to the media effects by
arguing that there exists a direct correlation between the anti-social behavior depicted through
the mass media program and violence in the society. The teenagers have resulted in drug abuse
because they are vulnerable to the message and content that they derive from the mass media.
The proponents of this model use a variety of films that have led to a growth of violence on the
youths.
More importantly, cultural imperialism is an unethical influence on the public. Cultural
imperialism is an ancient phenomenon that can into being long before the establishment of U.S
as a superpower. The British ruled the less developed economies around the world, thereby
exiting intense cultural influence and imperialism. Today, the mass media has taken on this goal.
American movies tend to dominate the world, hence spreading the American culture. Today,
being a dominant and developed culture, it has caused cultural imperialism. The Hollywood
movies and studios are on the rise, while business models are directly sourced from U.S. Hence,
it is possible to encounter a similar business model in foreign countries. This may be beneficial,
but on average, it undermines the local culture. It is causing the rapid spread of western ideals,
which negatively affect local ideals. Cultural imperialism arising from the mass media message
has a direct adverse effect on the society as discussed below.
Cultural imperialism not only seeks to capture the elites but presently, it aims and
capturing the entire mass. The TV precisely invades the home from the inside and outside, and
from all corners, which creates homogenization impacts. Under the disguise of universalism, it
spearheads the goals of the imperial power. Cultural imperialism can be perceived as terrorism of
the indigenous cultures. It is the source of destruction for the social movement in the societies.
Further, it has led to a displacement of the local cultural tasks in favor of foreign activities,
which is utterly unethical. The goal of mass media message should be informing the public rather
than displacing and causing an unforeseen change in behaviors and cultures. Cultural terrorism
