Choose Three Types of Elder abuse and Discuss Challenges You Perceive in Abolishing
Them.
Elder abuse refers to an intentional act or the failure to act that creates or causes a risk
of harm to an older person aged above 60 years (American Psychological Association, 2021).
There are several types of elder abuse.
i. Abandonment: This refers to the desertion of an elderly individual by a person
who has physical custody of the elderly person (American Psychological
Association, 2021). Also, abandonment entails the desertion by an individual who
has assumed accountability or responsibility for the provision of care to the
elderly person. Besides, during the abandonment, the victim may be left in the
hospital, a hospice, a nursing home, or a certain public location. In most cases,
abandonment happens when an individual feels overburdened or she lacks the
requisite resources to provide care to the victim.
ii. Physical abuse: This entails the use of physical force that is likely to result in
bodily injury, impairment, or physical pain.
iii. Sexual abuse: This involves non-consensual sexual intercourse or contact of any
type with an elderly individual (Lachs & Pillemer, 2015)... There are high cases of
sexual abuse among the elderly because in most cases, they lack the energy to
defend themselves.
Justify Why You Consider Them as the Most Crucial
I consider these abuses as the most crucial because they have a high prevalence rate.
Besides, these abuses are most crucial because they can cause death or injury to the affected
individual. For this reason, measures have to be taken in order to prevent the elderly from
being victims of these abuses and the consequent effects.
Discuss how you can advocate and protect the elderly from abuse.
