Gene drives are one of the most efficient disease control mechanisms. They are considered very
useful due to their high efficacy levels in suppressing and altering target populations compared to
other conventional methods (Deplazes-Zemp et al., 2020). The use of gene drives also provides a
long-lasting solution to life-threatening conditions as compared to conventional methods since
genetic alteration can continue to be spread across several generations of the species without being
actively reintroduced (Gotbaum, 2017). Another benefit of gene drive is that it requires no
particular infrastructure to enhance its effectiveness, making the process highly accessible even in
areas with less infrastructure. Additionally, the application of the process is very easy since it
involves the release of the gene drive, which is naturally spread without any requirement of
changes in the behavior of individuals (Deplazes-Zemp et al., 2020). Lastly, the possibility of
introducing and spreading another gene drives modification to the specific species. This situation
could be used to minimize the undesired effects of the first gene drive mechanisms to the non-
target species (Gotbaum, 2017). The main ethical aspect of the gene drive mechanism is that the
gene drive is an irreversible mechanism that may pose a significant threat to nature and negative
consequences, especially to the species which directly benefit from the species with altered genes,
such as organisms that feed in the mosquitoes (Deplazes-Zemp et al., 2020).
