Suture Techniques and Training
Lessons from the video
The video that is subject to this discussion is from the Duke Suture Skills Course and
the presentation is done by Dr. Michael Zenn. The primary purpose of the video is to
demonstrate the technical aspects that one needs to understand in order to cosmetically close
all open wounds. In the close to 20-minute presentation, Dr. Zenn presents a simple, exciting
and yet captivating process through which individuals may execute different types of sutures.
The presentation is made on the following themes: Instrument Tie, Simple Interrupted Tie,
Simple Buried Suture, Vertical Mattress Suture, Horizontal Mattress Suture, Figure-of-8,
Half Buried Suture, Simple Running Suture, Simple Running Locking Suture and
Subcuticular Running Suture. From the presentation, I have learned that there are many
factors that contribute to the successful execution of suturing. While the skill of the person
doing undoubtedly plays an important role, in the effectiveness of the process, there are other
factors that are also influential.
One important lesson that I gather from the presentation is that the choice of suture
instruments plays an important role in determining suture success. There is a need to make
sure that the instruments that are being used are fit for the location upon which the suture is to
be done, as well as the nature of the wounds being closed. The basic suture instruments that
need to be selected carefully include needle holder, fine suture scissors, toothed tissue forceps
and /or skin hook, and appropriate suture material. Once these instruments have been
selected, they need to be sterilized and handled with a lot of care. I realized from the
demonstrations that during the suturing, hygiene must be considered very carefully. There is
a need to avoid any substance that may contaminate the wound since that may aggravate the
condition (Gaonzalez et al., 2019). Additionally, I realized from the presentation that one
