City of Inmates Book Review
Kelly Lytle Hernández in City of Inmates underscores the history and
subsequent study of race relations that took shape in the fifteenth century and
continued up to the twentieth century. The book is perfectly organized and
contains six significant chapters that are well arranged with distinct stories and
proper subheadings that make it easier for the reader to follow and understand.
The first chapter outlines the Tongvan Basin natives’ history especially before the
colonization by Spain in 1769. The second chapter gives a proper picture of
incarceration by emphasizing the significance and plight of the tramps after their
incarceration. Subsequently, the third chapter focuses on the continued theme of
incarceration this time targeting the Chinese especially through the Geary Act of
1892. In the fourth chapter, the Mexican immigrants are introduced in the U.S in
the 1900s (Hernández, 2017). Consequently, the fifth chapter discusses the
increased recorded number of Mexican prisoners emanating from their illegal
migration into the U.S. Lastly, the sixth chapter succinctly explains part of the
violence meted out on the African Americans through incarceration. Ideally, the
predominant theme contained in the book relates to the aspect of incarceration and
how it has continued to affect various communities across the United States.
Essentially, the book contains various patterns of mass incarceration that are
displayed in the city of Los Angeles. It is however worth noting that since Los
Angeles is a city within the United States, the book can well be used to explain
similar patterns that took place across the country and thus giving a general
