Introduction
The following paper looks at conflicts on an international level. In this regard therefore the
conflict identified is the South Sudanese civil war that has lasted for decades resulting to several
thousand deaths. The paper analyses the conflict, its sources and repercussions to the people of
South Sudan as well. Essentially, we focus on the overall conflict issue as well as the sources of
the conflict.
The overall conflict issue
The South Sudan civil war, a war that has claimed many lives has evolved as a result of several
factors. Key among them is the sharing of resources after the South Sudan managed to secede
from its mother country originally known as Sudan. This is after several disagreements between
the upper North and the South that caused much disapproval of the ruling regime at the time by
the south Sudanese. It is after a long period of armed struggle by armed forces formed by the
south Sudan’s which were known as the Sudan People Liberation Army, (SPLA). The forces that
were formed contributed greatly to seek liberation from the predominantly Muslim North as
compared to the mostly Christian South. They had claims of unequal sharing of resources,
discrimination and the general disagreements that continued to face the two groups. Finally
when they got the go ahead to hold a referendum on cessation, there was passed by a majority
vote that the two countries go apart. However after separating still South Sudan has continued to
face challenges in its stability which has affected its economic growth as well as its social
cohesiveness to have a united country. Today it is facing a civil conflict between the two main
ethnic groups namely the Nuer and the Dinka due to power wrangles that has escalated to ethnic

president Salva Kiir and his deputy president Dr. Riek Machar caused a fury between the two
communities whom the two come from. This resulted to rearmament of the communities shortly
after they had settled peace deals causing massive deaths as each community targeted the other.
Sources of the conflict
The south Sudan civil war conflict can be seen to originate from both the economic and social
perspectives. It is largely a manifestation of the disagreements that exist within the new
government with regard to power sharing, sharing of resources and the societal flaws that have
existed before paving the way for armament of illegal militias as well as civilians who continue
to keep the security of the country at stake. These sources therefore are;
Political differences
The current president, Salva Kiir has over the past differed greatly with his deputy president Dr.
Riek Machar. Kiir has previously blamed Dr. Machar of instigating a coup de tat that failed to
materialize. In fact it can be noted that there was no evidence gathered to affirm this allegation
something that the Machars side felt was ill advised. This continued to create a bad blood
between the two leaders and the major ethnic backgrounds that they come from finally resulting
to a point where President Salva Kiir sacked his deputy Riek Machar. This happening resulted to
spontaneous violence from the already armed civilians where the Dinka and the Nuer started
attacking each other which was further aggravated by the support of Machars soldiers to the
Nuer community.
