Based on Elerath’s (2009) article, what are the two main categories of hard disk drive failure?
How does SMART technology work, and what does it mean when limits are exceeded?
According to the article the two main categories are known as operational failures and latent
defects. Operational failure is a failure where data cannot be written in the hard drive or a data
cannot be retrieved from a hard drive or both. The main reason of operational failure is because
the read and write heads of the hard disk drive is either losing its track or cannot stay on the
track. Moreover, another possibility of having this failure is because the magnetic properties of
the hard drive are damaged such as an ESD (electrical static discharge) has happened, it was
exposed to high temperature, or there was a physical impact that happened such as when
accidentally dropped.
For latent defects, the data is corrupted or missing which cannot be read anymore however the
hard disk drive is still functioning and is capable of writing and reading data to the other sectors
of the hard disk drive. This happens when the hard disk is exposed to scratches, hydrocarbon
contamination, or smeared by soft particles.
The smart technology constantly monitors the state of the hard disk drive of possibility of
committing an error by doing prediction based from the collected and analyzed data. The data are
stored in the RAM (random access memory) of the computer and has a limit. The smart
technology works accordingly to find a solution based on its prediction. Once the limit has been
reached because of lots of data, the possibility that the previous data will be purged or replaced
and wrong calculation and solution might happen.
Based on Thibodeau’s (2008) article, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the use of
mainframes?
The advantage of a mainframe according to the article are the following:
→ The reliability of mainframe is high because it is stable and meets its specifications and
purpose.
→ It is confidently secured because it has been with the organization for a long time and it
is still functioning.
The disadvantage of a mainframe according to the article are the following:
→ It eats lots of space because the size is huge and this is because it is using old model of
hardware.
→ It is costly in terms of maintenance since the hardware is old and cannot be easily
purchased, as well as the application required to run the system.
→ It performs slow.
