Environmental Justice Proposal
The primary goal of the environmental justice movement was to address the
inequities caused by environmental factors that disproportionately affect the health of
minorities, such as asthma and cancer (Mohai et al., 2009). Due to the extensive
environmental racism, minority ethnic communities like African Americans
experience more significant harm from pollutants than white Americans. The problem
emanates from industrial siting, toxic material dumping, waste disposal, and heavy
vehicle traffic routing near minority ethnic communities' neighborhoods (Berkovitz,
2020). According to Peña-Parr (2020), the poor living environment caused by
environmental racism reduces the quality of life in the community while also
increasing the probability of developing diseases such as cancer among community
members.
Over 75 percent of African Americans live near gas and oil facilities that emit
toxic gases into the atmosphere hence exposing them to high asthma and cancer rates
(Garza, 2021). The disproportionate prevalence is even more pronounced in children,
with black children four times more likely to require hospitalization and ten times
more likely to die from asthma than white children (Ray,2021). Ray (2021) explores
the impact of environmental racism on minority health based on the disproportionate
incidence of disease between minorities and whites in the United States. According to
case studies and data analysis, the main reason for the high incidence is environmental
pollution. People live in a polluted environment for a long time, resulting in the
degradation of human body functions and lowered immunity due to inhalation or
