Art entails expressing creativity, imagination, and individual experiences through visual
forms like paintings and sculptures. Although artists do not last forever due to the mortal nature
of human beings, specific artistic pieces have a lasting impact on the respective society. Various
occurrences in society affect the perceptions and imaginations of artists, hence influencing the
nature of art pieces created. Notably, the Black Death pandemic is among the historical
calamities that significantly affected the art industry. Even though Black Death was later cured, it
resulted in adverse effects on the lives of individuals, as implied through artistic pieces of the
time.
Black Death occurred 14
th
century, resulting in the death of more than one-third of the
European population (Jedwab et al., 2019). Owing to the extensive loss of lives, individuals
developed diverse perceptions towards life. The pandemic killed the wealthy, poor, educated,
unskilled, and prominent individuals among other society members. According to Stokstad &
Cothren (2018), artistic content borrows much from the immediate environment. Therefore, the
respective artists transferred the traumatic experiences of the pandemic into art. For instance, the
arts became more realistic concerning the issue of death. Medrane-Cabral (2010) reveals that
artists faced massive deaths, shifting their perception to believe in the existence of God. During
the Black Death pandemic, individuals did not give much attention to Christianity and other
religious groupings. However, after experiencing massive deaths, they faced the reality of death,
hence becoming more spiritual. Besides, Black Death resulted in the creation of more realistic
arts. After experiencing massive casualties, artists started creating content related to death, hence
appearing more realistic. Before the pandemic, arts did not communicate direct information
concerning the dangers of death to the vulnerable and ignorant society members. However, after
the Black Death pandemic, artists invested artistic resources to communicate the nature of death.
