Genie the Wild Child Documentary Questions
1. What happened to Genie in childhood (1 pt.)?
Genie was locked up in solitary by her parents from a young age. Her parents thought that
she was retarded from her childhood and therefore decided to lock her up in a room in which
she spent most of her life, till she was found at the age of 13 (Genie, 1997). She had very
minimal contact with the outside world and human contact, and this affected her
psychological and physical development. She was not able to talk by the time they found her.
Since her discovery, scientists conducted various tests on her to help unravel the factors
surrounding her condition and to try to help her.
2. What developmental difficulties did Genie suffer as a result of her environment?
Specifically discuss her difficulties with language, motor skills, and bonding with others
(6 pts.)
Genie could not walk properly by the time she was found, and could also not talk. She was
inconsistent and spat often. She lacked social skills and in one instance in the documentary, a
scientist says that when he reached out to great her, genie stretched out her finger. Genie also
had a difficulty in chewing and swallowing and could additionally not be able to focus her
eyes at one spot fully or for long. Genie could also not make any noises like a normal child
her age could do, and one of the scientists explains that this could have been because she had
been conditioned that way by her parents.
3. State three ways that Genie’s case was similar to that of French Wild Child of Aveyron
as described in the documentary? (6 pts)
a) Genie’s case was similar to that of Aveyron, as both of them were neglected by their
parents from a very tender age.
