1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?
Diversity is a term used to refer to a race, religion, ethnic, gender, disability, sexual orientation,
age, education, geographic origin.
Diversity is valued because it allows people to recognize differences between multicultural people
and recognizes those differences as an asset. It allows people of different cultures to
demonstrate individuality while at the same time respecting others. Various diversified groups
that make up a population i.e. community, city, county, state and country all have something to
contribute to society. That is why the United States is such a wonderful place to live because the
diversity in this country has given the people strength at the same time being flexible towards
other ethnic groups.
2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?
Ethnocentrism is the tendency to assume that one’s culture and way of life is superior to all
others.
Ethnocentrism can be detrimental to a society because it often clouds one’s view to openly
accept different cultures instead of holding contempt towards anothers culture’s. This contempt
held towards other cultures can lead to prejudice, ethnophaulism, and eventually to the act of
discrimination. Prejudices and discrimination can destroy a society.

Immigration can be difined as leaving one’s country and settling in another country as a
permanent resident (19).
4. What are some of the ways groups of people are label and identified?
Some of the ways groups of people are identified through classifying minority groups in one of the
main four categories; race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. But there are others such as age,
disability status, physical appearance, and sexual orientation are among some other factors that
are used to label subordinate groups of people.
5. Why do people label and group other people?
people label and group people because they are everyday used commonly used labels. From an
early age we are raised to believe the human species revolves around the phrase, “Survival of
the Fittest”. Growing up we continue to hear other phrases and it is reinforced in school by family
and peers such as, “This is a dog eat dog world”. Even in school kids place other kids in groups
such as; jocks, nerds, rebels, emo/gothic and go as far as labeling them by calling them nerd,
athelets, outcast, goth. This labeling and grouping of people have been socially constructed. Yet
these social constructions can have a powerful impact, wether self-applied or applied by others
and can lead to ethnocentrism.
