1. What are the methods a nurse can use to gather cultural information from patients?
The techniques that a nurse may utilize to collect cultural information from the patients
include ethnographic methods and participant observation. The ethnographies emphasize on the
description of the culture of the patients in a very comprehensive and complex way. The
ethnographic techniques involve engaging in the extensive fieldwork in which gathering of data
is primarily by interviews, artifacts, symbols, observations and numerous other data sources
(Draper, 2015). The ethnographic techniques can be utilized by the nurse to look at the patients
in their cultural environment, their deeds and their words, the manner in which the patients
interact with each other as well as with their cultural and social milieu and their language
(Draper, 2015).
The participant observation technique occurs when the nurse actually becomes the
component of the group of patients he or she is studying so as to gather data and comprehend the
social phenomenon or the glitch. The main intention of this technique is to gain profound
understanding as well as the familiarity with the patients, their beliefs, values and ways of life
(Jorgensen, 2015).
