diabetes epidemic in America
There is a diabetes epidemic in America. Considering the CDC’s national diabetes statistics
report 2020 that states that “new diabetes cases have decreased over the last decade except in
people younger than 20 years.” It also shows “34.2 million Americansjust over 1 in 10have
diabetes. 88 million American adultsapproximately 1 in 3—have prediabetes.” (National
Diabetes Statistics Report, 2020.)We have to reach people of all ages to screen them.
Many people do not get screened due to lack of insurance or fear of the medical costs. Also
COVID 19 turn our lives a bit more complicated in regards of medical access and sedentary life
style.
Currently the CDC is offering and online tool the Prediabetes Risk Test. This is a simple
questionnaire that educates the individual in regards of his/her risk to have Prediabetes. This is
an invaluable screening tool that also provides culturally and linguistically appropriate diabetes
education resources for a range of individuals and groups ethnic minorities and people.
(People at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes, CDC, 2021)
There is also the NDPP which is “framework that gives Americans access to evidence-based,
affordable lifestyle change programs that delay or reverse the onset of type 2 diabetes.”
The National Diabetes Prevention Program also called National DPP originated in 2010 to
address prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. “This national effort created partnerships between
public and private organizations to offer evidence-based, cost-effective interventions that help
prevent type 2 diabetes in communities across the United States. (U.S Preventive Medicine,
Inc., 2021)
