Building Trust with Patient Population
Trust and general rapport is a crucial aspect in healthcare professionalism that ensure
peaceful coexistence between the two parties, creating room for quality health services.
Nurses interact with patients in close intervals, making them a closer party to a patient
population. This relationship strengthens and gives room for better health services that rely
on trust among them. There are several ways and simple strategic approaches that any
healthcare worker or a nurse would adopt to conceive a healthy nurse-patient population
relationship that is requisite for trust.
With several creative initiatives to build this trust, some prove to be more significant
than the minor strategies. The first thing to initiate trust with the patient population is to have
peaceful and friendly communication. Effective communication acts as the pillar to
everything that points to trust, more specifically with patients (Allinson and Char, 2016).
Educating patients on common health concerns, things they should know about their
conditions, and first aid techniques, among others, initiates the process of trust.
Expressing empathy about patients’ situations is important in developing trust.
However, empathy should not include the aspect of becoming emotionally overwhelmed.
Calmness and competency are ethical aspects trained to nurses. Adhering to them prevents
unnecessary disagreements and violence with patients (Allinson and Char, 2016). This
maintains trust and calmness. Factors that affect trust with the patient population include
patient cooperation and willingness to coexist with nurses, nurse’s competence, patient
population’s socio-demographic factors, and treatment quality (Gopichandran and Satish,
2013).
