ABSTRACT
Effectively communicating, this is the key basis to any interaction, whether individual or in a
group. Being able to communicate effectively can, in some cases; be the difference between life
and death. Effective communication in the correctional system could be the difference between
detecting a high risk of recidivism or low risk of recidivism. When there is effective
communication between a caseworker and a client, gathering information, building trust and
handling conflict can be practically effortless. (Zeiger, 2018) Among the skills needed to be an
effective communicator, situational analysis, organization, concision; listening is the most
important. (Mulder, 2009) This paper will look at the Amarillo Correctional Facility, and
effective communication strategies that can be utilized here. We will also talk about
communication skills and how they affect caseworkers and recommend strategies to be used at
the facility.
