The birth of a child is a joy and a blessing. However, many challenges and emotions
come along with a new bundle of joy. In the first part of this essay, I’ll discuss how the dynamics
change with each family member. In the second part of this essay, I will discuss perceptual,
motor, and physical development in infants and children ages one through three.
The newborn experiences quite a few changes after their birth. From coming into this
world to meeting their parents and others and having to adjust to all new environments are just a
few. The baby will start to bond with their parent(s). As time goes on, the newborn will grow and
develop. Unfortunately, not all newborns will have been born healthy or have loving and
supportive parents. If the parents do not love and support them, they could grow up without
knowing how to bond with others. These circumstances, in turn, can cause developmental
problems.
Some mothers adjust easily to motherhood, and others may feel overwhelmed, tired, and
even depressed. The mother may experience many different emotions during the pregnancy, such
as excitement, anxiety, overwhelmed, stressed, and many more. They could be very excited to
meet their new baby and anxious due to caring for another life. The new baby represents a lot

mother reacts to her new bundle of joy. Some mothers will bond with the newborn right away,
while other mothers may take days or weeks to form that bond.
Fathers may experience many different emotions before and after the birth of a baby.
They may feel anxiety about caring for another life and could be apprehensive about whether
they will be a good father. The father might be hostile that the child may take some freedoms
away from him. He may also be confused about what needs to be done and when it needs to be
done. He may feel alienated from his spouse as she might be more focused on caring for the
child. The father may experience depression from feeling overwhelmed but also may feel happy
about seeing his new child. The father could feel affection for the child as well. Fathers may not
bond with their children until they are born due to not having a real connection yet. A father may
be very involved with every aspect of the child’s life or not form much attachment. Many factors
may contribute to how they act as a father. Some elements are what kind of relationships he has
with his father, satisfaction with marital decision making and general marital satisfaction, sharing
of employment and parenting responsibilities, and beliefs about fatherhood.
Siblings may be excited about the new edition, or they may reject him/her. A sibling may
engage in behaviors as baby talk, using lousy table manners, acting out, or regressing in toileting
behaviors to get the attention they feel they should be getting. On the other hand, some siblings
may want to help with taking care of the infant. Parents can help their older children adjust to a
new baby by talking to them and answering any questions. After the baby is born, parents should
always set time aside to spend with the other children.
Extended family members’ reactions can vary widely. Grandparents usually feel joy and
are thrilled. However, grandparents may view this precious bundle as a sign that they are getting
older. They may also try to tell the parents how they should parent the child. By doing this
