South Florida’s Population Health
South Florida is composed of Broward, Miami Dade, and Monroe counties. The three
counties have a population greater than 6million people, with Miami Dade having the largest
population of the three counties. The commonwealth fund ranked the overall healthcare in
Florida among the worst-performing, where it spends nineteen dollars per individual on free
health or an average of 51% in the whole nation.(Sexton, 2020). When compared with any other
state, Florida has more children without medical homes. According to a report in 2018, it was
clear that Florida had a 5% of health care insurance disparities between the insured and the
uninsured black and Hispanic individuals(Sexton, 2020). 15% of the total population in Florida
has no health care coverage matched to 21% of African origin and Hispanic inhabitants who
stand at 26% (Sexton, 2020). Two hundred six thousand nine hundred seventy-five residents
from residents died in the year 2019. The black population had a decreased age-adjusted death
rate of 51% since 1970 compared to a 39%(Sexton, 2020) decline among the white population.
The death rates from firearms, homicides, drug and substance abuse were at 12.4%,
6.4%, and 25.1%, respectively(CDC, 2017). From 2008 to 2017, the death rates from HIV
declined by 47%(CDC, 2017). Gonorrhea infection rates stand at 34% in the 2017 statistics, a
higher figure than the average of the last five years, while syphilis was 38%(CDC, 2017). More
than one hundred thousand cases of chlamydia were reported in the entire year, which was the
highest disease to be registered. The numbers of HIV infections diagnosed declined from 2016-
2017, with HIV rates per one hundred thousand population decreasing from 32.5 to 24.1 from the
year 2008 to 2017(CDC, 2017). The risk factors for heart disease in Florida include cigarette
