ACUTE EXACERBATION OF CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD)  COPD is defined as a common and preventable disease characterised by persistent airflow limitation that is usually progressive and associated with an enhanced chronic inflammatory response in the airway and the lungs to noxious particles or gases(GOLD 2013)  Chronic Bronchitis- is defined clinically as the presence of a chronic productive cough for 3 months during each of 2 consecutive years (other causes of cough being excluded).  Emphysema-defined pathologically as an abnormal, permanent enlargement of the air spaces distal to the terminal bronchioles, accompanied by destruction of their walls without obvious fibrosis 3 6/23/2021 1. Tobacco smoking Total dose of tobacco inhaled depends on  age of starting smoking  depth of inhalation  total number of cigarettes smoked (one “pack year” is defined at the equivalent of 20 cigarettes per day for 1 year) 2.
