Personal Leadership Evaluation
In an effective organization, one significant aspect is active listening. Productivity can be
improved and it is critical by having active listening. Most leaders and managers are in positions
to provide feedback that is relevant, as well as understanding numerous non-verbal cues are just
a few vital traits employees should have. Active listening is also important in our lives every day
because it improves our abilities to analyze and determine solutions. It is possible that the
effectiveness will be hindered by barriers. It is the active listener job to minimize such barriers
(Fitzpatrick, Sanders, & Worthen, 2004). Also, active listening is considered a two-way
communication tool (Adams, & Anderson, 2016).
Leadership Strengths and Challenges
I completed a few online self-surveys and I fell in a 21-27 score chart that said I set
parameters, listen, and build trust ("What's Your Leadership Style?” n.d.). Currently, I am retired
from the United States Navy. For the most part during my twenty years of service, I was always
motivated at each command. All ethics, procedures, and standards I followed as they were
explained to me. I wanted to learn and was an active listener and other sailors saw that in me. As
I got older and made rank I was put in a position of leadership. Everywhere I went I made it a
point to have a positive working environment to improve production. Strengths, I would say I
had a few. One was self-discipline; because of no matter the working hours if it was an
emergency with an immediate impact on the mission it was handled. Problem-solving comes
without saying by having young sailors who leave home for the first time you must be their
direct supervisor and mentor them and train them to one take your job one day.
The challenges can be a double-edged sword. For one, you are in a leadership or
management position in charge of twenty to twenty-five people and that looks good on your
