INTRODUCTION • It occurs only sporadically in the advanced countries where immunization programmes have been successfully implemented and maintained. • Affects mainly under-fives but uncommon before the age of 6 months because of the circulating maternal antibody in the child. INTRODUCTION • It is highly contagious with infectivity rate close to 97 percent with high morbidity and mortality. • Its effect is more marked among undernourished but runs a milder course among the healthy well nourished children. • An attack of Measles confers a life long immunity on the sufferer. AETIOLOGY • The aetiological agent of Measles is the Measles virus. • It is a single-stranded RNA virus in the family Paramyxoviridae and genus Morbillivirus. • Human is the only host of measles virus.
