Definitions • Therapeutics: The branch of medicine that deals with the treatment of disease and the art of healing. • Therapeutics: In pharmacology is the use of drugs and the method of their administration in the treatment of diseases. • Pharmacokinetics: is the disposition of drug within the body. (ADME; Bioavailability, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion). Definitions • Pharmacodynamics: Is the relationship between drug dose or drug concentration and the response. • Therapeutic index: Relative safety or efficacy profile of a drug at a given concentration. The ratio between the dosage that causes a lethal effect and the dosage that causes a therapeutic effect. • Therapeutic margin: It is the margin of safety of a given concentration of drug. • The paediatric age group spans through neonatal, infancy, childhood and adolescence, hence the need to understand therapeutics in children. • Children are not miniatures of adult, thus drugs must be delivered in correct amounts so as to achieve the desired effect while avoiding undesired effects.
