Business Profile
Starbucks has been a very productive and successful business since the first day they opened
their doors in 1971 in Seattle, Washington. This company started off by providing the public
with coffee, tea, and an assortment of spices, and now they have expanded their menu with
edible items, cold coffee beverages, expresso, smoothies, and various fruit juice drinks
(Coffee.org). They also pride themselves on their exception love for what they do which is why
they only use the finest beans. It is a very meticulous process when selecting the perfect beans,
but clearly it has paid off. Not only do they provide exceptional products, but they also provide
the consumer with an inviting atmosphere and remarkable customer service. Let’s just say
Starbucks really did their research when it comes to providing a one of a kind experience. Their
mission statement describes them best; “To inspire and nurture the human spirit- one person, one
cup, and one neighborhood at a time" (Waldron).
Our government is very influential and active in regulating and setting quality standards in
regards to coffee beans. The United States has much stricter regulations as far as all coffee beans
must be free from disease and pests tortious even be allowed in the country. The process in
which it goes through is also highly considered (Economic Journal, 2016).
Climate change has had a major impact on coffee crops and it all derived from a 2012 plant
disease called Coffee Leaf Rust. Due to drastic temperatures and high altitude rains, this disease
cost $500 million in crop damage. Climate change is not a localized issue and will continue to
manipulate production (Economic Journal, 2016). Even still, Starbucks had a revenue growth of
5% compared to their competitor Dunkin’ with 3.8% revenue growth (Anderson, 2018).
Governmental Actions
The National Coffee Association is the cardinal trade association for the United States coffee
industry since 1911 (National Coffee Association). They regulate standards for all food and
dietary products in the U.S. to protect industry priorities such as that of the:
